The Otago Peninsula can be, according to our Cycling New Zealand guidebook, New Zealand’s flattest ride. That is if you ride along the coast road. The guide book also suggests that you can do the return journey inland, over the hills, along the ridge. However, one should be warned that it is very hilly and is best suited for those who know their VO2 max. Well, since we know our VO2 max – we decided to do the climb. It is important to note: just because one knows their VO2 max does not mean they are the fittest individual in the world. Just sayin’

The Otago Peninsula is an extension of Dunedin along the southeast coast of the South Island. It is thought to be where some of the first settlers to New Zealand laid claim to the land. It is a beautiful ride both along the water and in the hills. We lucked out on weather and had fabulous views of the rugged coast and the hills of Dunedin.
We did come across this “Batch” – high on the ridge line – complete with their own helicopter
A great way to spend Valentine’s Day!
